05/24/07     Surprise, surprise!

ABLOOO has a new look. Functionality should be about the same. Based the redesign on the Multiflex 2 Version 1 template, a fixed width and business-like design using XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS.

Get ready for the year-end party, coming soon.

Scoring with 5 Bowlers

When all 5 players on a team bowl, only 4 scores count. The one left out is the game score closest to the bowler's average. It may turn out to be a different bowler each game, or the same one more than once. Here's an example from November:

BOWLER AVE G1 Diff1 G2 Diff2 G3 Diff3
Steve 133 118 -15 110 -23 110 -23
Sara 98 98 0 97 -1 100 +2
Julie 83 111 +28 77 -6 89 +6
Andrew 103 95 -8 115 +12 98 -5
Scott 152 142 -10 170 +18 125 -27

Sara bowled almost exactly her average in all three games, so her scores won't count. They would have affected her team's performance (and her own average) the least, good or bad.

But it won't always be this tidy. Here's another example from the same night:

BOWLER AVE G1 Diff1 G2 Diff2 G3 Diff3
Sarah 105 98 -7 132 +27 84 -21
Becki 108 109 +1 94 -14 122 +14
Aaron 117 129 +12 129 +12 94 -23
Katie 117 116 -1 95 +22 140 +23
Matt 123 138 +15 116 -7 115 -8

Becki & Katie were both within 1 pin of their average in Game 1; Katie's score was under, so hers won't count.*

* The first tie-breaker will be fewest number of games previously deleted. If this scenario were to happen again, for instance, Katie's score would count and Becki's would not.

In Games 2 and 3, Matt's scores were closest to his average. So what gets entered into the office statistics is this:

BOWLER G1 G2 G3
Sarah 98 132 84
Becki 109 94 122
Aaron 129 129 94
Katie - 95 140
Matt 138 - -

There are two side-effects of this system. One is that the computer thinks Katie's only bowled twice and Matt only once. More significantly, Matt's average changed - in this case it went up to 138 - but there will be other times when a bowler's average goes down.

If your team is uncomfortable with how this works, you may choose to bowl only 4 of your 5 players in any given game. But ABLOOO is more about having fun than scores, stats and prizes, so this system lets everybody bowl who wants to, without having to worry about figuring any of this out yourselves.

Questions and comments are most welcome - it's your league!

VP/First Lady

10/31/06     Welcome back

It's good to be back for the 2006-2007 season. This is the inaugural edition of the web site, so it may be a little rough around the edges after being rushed into production. Future editions will hopefully be a little more polished.
